Nambour took the points over Maroochydore at a rain soaked Crusher Park on Sunday. They ran out winners 22 points to 16.
“Mate, that was a tough effort today,” said Crushers player coach Martin Cordwell. “Maroochyore obviously had a few injuries there, but to their credit, they stuck in the arm wrestle and it was a good grind. Glad to get away with the two points there.”
The sides were evenly matched through out the game with both struggling to hold the ball in the conditions.
“[We had] one on the bench for about 50 minutes,” said Maroochydore captain Oscar Crawley. “But, yeah, tough game in the wet. But, yeah, good crowd, good atmosphere, our old boys’ day here at Nambour. So, yeah, it was good.”
Nambour were playing in a old boys kit with the club celebrating the 1976 All Whites premiership
“This is All Whites. So in 1985, South and All Whites merged together to make Nambour Crushers,” Cordwell said. “This is the recognition of the 1976 All Whites team who won the grand final, won the premiership back then, mate, all the way back then, 50 years ago. This is the kit they wore in 1976.”
Many of the past players keep coming back.
“There’d be about eight or nine of the boys from 1976 inside the clubhouse right now,” Cordwell said. “Look, Old Boys Round’s probably one of our biggest rounds. Anyone you speak to walking around here is probably a past player at Nambour. When Nambour’s winning, they really rally behind us and the town rally’s behind us, and that’s something we’ve just got to keep doing for the boys.”
Maroochydore host their own old boys day back at their traditional home at Wises Road on Saturday.
That game is againsts Kawana.
Nambour travel north to Tewantin to play Noosa.
“Next week, Noosa at Noosa,” Cordwell said. “So it doesn’t get any easier. There’s no easy games in this comp, so looking forward to getting up to Noosa and having a run.”
