Reds and Wallabies half back Tate McDermott will return to club rugby this weekend.
He will run out for University of Queensland against Souths on Saturday at University of Queensland Rugby Club.
“It’s also that it has been a while,” said McDermott.
“I’ve never not played footy for this long ever.
“So to get the opportunity to wear a different bit of maroon in the UQ jersey is something I’m really excited for.”
“Obviously UQ’s played a pretty big part in my early stages from when I made the transition from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane.
“Guys like Cam McIntosh, Mick Heenan, these kind of guys, Cameron Chater, through my Colts and then into the grades.
“Those guys were terrific coaches and terrific people. And then there’s also been a lot of talent in every position really. “
McDermott is coming back from a hamstring injury he suffered last year.
“I had to get that surgically reattached and it was looking initially like a four to six month recovery, but it ended up being about seven, closer to eight, which takes us to this weekend where I’m feeling really good.
“So yeah, I’m really looking forward to getting back out there.”
McDermott’s brother Flynn also returns to club rugby this weekend.
“Pretty crazy coincidence, really, being my first game back in UQ’s [and] also Flynn’s first game back from a trip to Germany,” McDermott said.
“That and also Liam Wright’s first game back at Easts, you know, there’s a there’s a lot of coincidence happen happening over this weekend in club footy.”
As to what the future holds?
“I won’t put a cap on it, but I just want to get back to playing what I know I’m capable of,” Mc Dermott said.
“I want to get back running the ball, being confident in my hamstring.
“And, obviously, I’d love to get back into the Reds and the Wallabies.
“But, first things first, I’ve got to perform for the UQ Red Heavies.
“And it starts on Saturday.”
UQ v Souths will be broadcast, in Queensland, on 9GEM from 3pm.
