The Sunshine Coast cricket two day competition gets underway on Saturday.

Eight clubs will compete in Division 1 with a further four clubs fielding sides in the lower grades.

“I think fours will be pretty good,” said Cooroy Eumundi T20 captain Damon Murphy.

“[There’s a] pretty good bulk [of the] side there from the last couple of years.

“Our sixes actually probably overachieved last year so they’ve actually, especially with the kids that are playing today, a bit more experience.

“They should have a pretty good year actually.”

While the Division 1 teams play Twenty20 cricket as part of the overall competition, lower grade sides play the format as a separate competition.

“It’s a really good opportunity for some of the guys that have played the lower grades last year to come up,” said Yandina captain Mat Burton.

“We get to have a good look at them and they performed really well.

“So we know we’ve got the depth this year to go in.”

Yandina’s highest grade this season is Division 3 with sides in fourths, fifths, and sixths.

“We won the [Div 3] comp pretty comprehensively in third grade last year,” Burton said.

“[We] nominated for second grade but [the Association] don’t want to buy in second grade.

“So they put us back into third grade again.

“We’re quietly confident that we’ll go well again this year but you never know till the end of the season

“We desperately want to get back in there but that’s just not at our control, unfortunately.”

Cooroy Eumundi will field sides in Divisions 4 and 6.

“We’ve got a couple of blokes in the nets that have been turned up bowling some heat at these kids,” said Murphy.

“So all [of the] experience is good experience, really. So I have to put this in the bag for the rest of the year, and hopefully both teams make finals, but early days.”
