Caloundra have moved into fourth on the Football Queensland Premier League 2 ladder with at 2 goals to 1 win over Moreton City Excelcior B.

We caught up with Caloundra captain Kaine Frew after the game

Q: Mate, how was that for a win?

A: Yeah, that was excellent, obviously. They’re a top team, top club. Been in this comp for a few years and done well for a number of years. That obviously just sets a statement, I think. We do mean business we’re not here to just make up the numbers. I think we go we go even points with them with a game in hand. So absolutely thrilled with that but it’s obviously now we know we’re through the pointy bit or into the pointy bit of the season. So we just got to build on that and take it week by week but obviously very happy.

Q: Obviously equal with them on points, just goal difference being the difference there.

Yeah, goal difference. But we do have a game in hand, so we missed a game last week. Brisbane
Knights, which will be played in about a month’s time, I think, down in Brizzy. So, yeah, look, obviously very happy with that result. As I said I think the top top top five or six are starting to sort of move away from the from the bottom six. We just got to stay in the hunt and just keep building on that uh we haven’t lost a game in a month i don’t think so if maybe even five weeks so we just got to keep going.

Q: I think you guys are fourth pending the Souths v Virginia result with that with that one game in hand.

A: Yeah absolutely

[Note: Virginia defeated Souths 2 nil]

Happy with where you guys are at this point of the season?

I think, yeah, we are happy. Obviously, like everyone, we’ve had a couple of injuries. You know, one of our defenders is away for work overseas for another few weeks. So, you know, but that’s football. We’re not full-time professionals and that’s what happens. But, you know, we’ve got the depth with the 23s. They’d have a really good result today as well. I think it might have been 5-0. against Ace. So that’s a good result so we do have boys coming up and stepping up and yeah it’s good to see for the club.

Q: Good seeing the young fellas coming through and hopefully building in seasons to come?

Yeah, obviously there’s a couple of us who are aging in the tooth. It’s good to have the young boys coming through to keep their momentum up into the future seasons. That’s what it’s all about. But like I said earlier, you know, they had a really good result today. They dropped points to Ace last time and a convincing win today. So, look, overall, both teams will be happy. But, you know, we’ll celebrate tonight with a couple beers, I’m sure, and then we’ll be back into it on Tuesday. Looking forward to Pine Hills next week.

Q: Pine Hills away or here next week?

Pine Hills away next week, yeah. But they’ve been getting results as well, so it’s not going to be
an easy game. And at the end of the day, yeah, we’ll just have to get prepared for Pine Hills. They play a little different to Ace, so I’m sure coaching staff will keep an eye on how they go this weekend and watch a bit of their footage. And then, yeah, we’ll work towards that for next, I think it might be next Sunday.

What do you take from today for that one?

Oh, look, I think work rate wins that. Obviously, there were spells where I thought we were the better team. There were spells where they were the better team. They’re very sharp through the midfield and up the top. But look, at the end of the day, a wins a win. They come out and started very well in the second half with a goal straight away. So full credit to them. Yeah look I think we we’re really happy with that result I think it’s just work right and we definitely improved on on our last fixture with Ace as well, so very happy.

Who stood out for you guys today?

Look, I think, obviously a little biased, but I think the midfield stood up today. There was a lot of work rate. I’d love to see the numbers in terms of metres covered across the midfield. Backline was solid too. They did a massive job. Ethan and Tony at the back were solid. At the end of the day, I don’t think there was probably one standout. I think it was a team effort, which is what you want.

Q: Anything else?

A: No, mate, that’s all.
