Brisbane Strikers will play National Premier Leagues soccer in 2027 after defeating Sunshine Coast Wanderers 2 goals to 0 at Balinger Park in Buderim on Sunday.
They’re now guaranteed to finish in the top two of this seasons Football Queensland Premier League 1 competition.
“We’re excited with the promotion,” Strikers coach Kevin Evans said.
“That’s step number one and the first objective.
“Next one, of course, we want to go and win the league. So that’s still our focus.
“But getting Brisbane Strikers back to the NPL is a huge moment for everyone at the club.”
Strikers would have gained promotion to National Premier Leagues Queensland with a draw. This despite having four games yet to play.
Strikers next game is against fellow promotion side Broadbeach at Perry Park.
“They’re a brilliant team,” Evans said.
“They’re unbeaten this year for a reason and Rick Coghlan, their coach is outstanding and a group of experienced players that knows how to win games of football.
“So we know exactly how difficult a task that will be.
“But again, at home, we’re always confident at home and the field is a little bit bigger and suits us a little bit more.
“So yeah, we’ll be looking forward to a great game.”
Wanderers consider this season a success despite not gaining promotion.
“We’ve been on a good league run up until today,” Wanderers coach Richard Henderson said.
“I think we were a little bit off the pace.
“Congratulations to Kev and the Brisbane Strikers on getting promotion tonight.
“Thoroughly deserved.
“Best team in the competition.
“But I do feel we let ourselves down in many respects because it was a good opportunity tonight and we didn’t really show up.
“The application wasn’t there from the players.”
The Wanderers next play Logan at Logan on Saturday.
