We interviewed Caloundra FC FQPL 2 captain Kain Frew at training on Tuesday night. Caloundra play Taringa on Saturday in a catch up of last weekend’s scheduled encounter.
Mate, how have you guys been since I last saw you?
So, yeah, we’ve obviously had a win against Southside Eagles last Saturday, which was a good result. Played relatively well that game, so definitely I think we’ve turned the corner. And then we had a midweek game against Northstar. Tough one, which was we were up 1-0 after75 minutes and ended up losing 2-1 with a late goal and a late home goal in the Cup. They’re obviously a QPL1 team, and we had a couple of injuries that night early on as well. Obviously, on the weekend, the game was called off against Taringa, catch-up round this weekend. A couple of results went our way on the weekend with games that were played, so it’s a big game on the weekend. I think three points will get us back into third, so we’re looking forward to that one. And obviously, a couple of injuries. last game, so hopefully those boys can recover. If not, we’ve obviously got full house here tonight, as you can see. So, yeah, looking forward to Saturday.
Happy to be striking distance to the top 3?
Yeah, obviously, it’s a nice close comp.Top team lost to the bottom on the weekend. So, yeah, it’s good to be there or thereabouts. It’s a very tight comp. It’s a tough comp. But, yeah, look, obviously, we’re taking it week by week. But a good result against Taringa will put us right in the mix. You know, we’re getting towards that halfway mark. I think there’s another two games for the first round of the season. So, yeah, no, we can’t complain, really.
When did you find out the game was washed out [last weekend]?
It was about lunchtime on Saturday. At the end of the day, look, it is what it is. We’re either going to have the weekend off, this week, we just pushed it forward a week. So, yeah, it wasn’t too bad.
What has preparation been like?
Well, we obviously played midweek last week as well. So, it would have been a busy week if we did have to play. It would have been three games in seven days, which is a big load. So, yeah, look, at
the end of the day, we played Wednesday night. We’re trained well this week. Prepare for Saturday. And obviously, hopefully, I think we’re the only game in the comp. So, it’s a big one.
I suppose you had a look at a couple of the other games for the round.
Yeah, I was watching a couple off and on. As I said earlier, it’s a tight comp. Top of the table was beaten by the bottom of the
table. A couple other top four teams drew. It’s up for the taking.
No one’s gone through undefeated. Everyone’s dropping points. So, yeah, definitely. It’s a good comp. It’s good to be in a comp that’s so competitive, yeah.
You can move a long way if you can get three points.
Yeah, correct. You get a couple wins on the trot. You can jump. You can jump right up. So, we obviously, yeah, we just need to take it week by week and chase those three points. And obviously, hopefully we can, yeah, we’ve just got to tighten up our defense. I think we’ve scored the most goals in the comp, but we’ve probably conceded the most as well. So if we can sort out that defense, I think we’ll do well.
[question about the number of goals conceded]
Yeah, always focusing on trying to reduce that. Obviously, a couple of injuries haven’t helped with that at the back. But it’s no excuse at the end of the day. You know, everyone’s grown men, so. You just need to stop then scoring and score more goals, you’ll get the points.
